Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill has first reading Published Date: 13/09/2024

The Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill had its first reading in the Commons yesterday (12 September 2024).  It was introduced by the Home Secretary The Rt Hon Yvette Cooper MP.

The draft Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill - also referred to as Martyn's Law - would require those responsible for publicly accessible venues to take steps to reduce the threat to the public from terrorist attacks.

It was published in response to a recommendation from the Inquiry into the Manchester Arena bombing in 2017 and a campaign by the mother of one of the victims.

Following the first reading, the Home Office published a fact sheet on Martyn's Law, detailing more information and guidance on the new Bill and how it will operate.

MPs will next consider the Bill at Second Reading on Monday 14 October 2024.
