Responding to latest Office for National Statistics data showing the number of deaths caused by alcohol has hit a record high, Cllr David Fothergill, Chairman of the Local Government Association’s Community Wellbeing Board, said:
“These are deeply concerning and tragic statistics.
“Every one of these figures represents a life lost too soon to the effects of alcohol misuse, leaving family and friends in mourning. They are another tragic reminder that people with alcohol and other substance misuse problems need the right support and treatment, which councils are committed to deliver.
“The number of alcohol-related deaths are stark, and we know the underlying causes are complex. Alcohol misuse is the biggest risk factor for death, ill-health and disability among 15-49 year olds in the UK, and the fifth biggest risk factor across all ages.
“We know there is still a huge amount of unmet need, with more than half a million adults estimated to have alcohol dependency needing specialist treatment. A high proportion are living in the most deprived areas.
“Now, more than ever, we need a concerted approach to tackling the issue of alcohol-related harms. Trends have worsened, and a proactive effort is needed to turn the tide.
“Councils are doing all they can to help keep people healthy throughout their lives and reduce pressure on the NHS and social care, but need the Government to provide certainty over their individual public health grants for next year as soon as possible so they can continue this vital work.”
