Statement from the Executive says scenario planning is underway to develop a package of potential measures that could be used to slow the spread of the virus and when would be the most effective time to deploy them.

The Executive met on 16^th December to consider the developing situation regarding the COVID-19 Omicron variant, and its potential impact.

The published statement from the Executive notes that there are currently 151 cases of Omicron confirmed in Northern Ireland, and evidence from other jurisdictions tell indicates that this is likely to increase rapidly in the coming days.

The public are urged to get their boosters, and to treat health care staff with respect amid condemnation at increased levels of threats and violence against HSC staff.

Engagement has stepped up between Ministers and although the full extent of this variant Is not yet known, public health experts are working intensively to analyse the evidence and will continue to update as the necessary data becomes available.

In the meantime, scenario planning is underway to develop a package of potential measures we could deploy to slow the spread of the virus and when would be the most effective time to deploy them. Those decisions will be underpinned by scientific and medical advice and the Executive will meet again next week to review the data and consider next steps.
