This Library paper published on 17 December 2020, looks at licensing and planning issues relating to betting shops in Great Britain, setting out discussions about the restrictions on local authorities ability to refuse applications and the planning controls through ‘use classes’ which were amended in April 2015, placing betting shops in the “sui generis” category, so any change of use to a betting shop requires an application to the local planning authority for planning permission.
