First electric taxi licensed in North West Leicestershire Published Date: 11/10/2019

North West Leicestershire has its first electric private hire vehicle after CK Cars’ new Tesla was officially licenced by the district council.

The Ellistown firm has invested £50,000 in the new car as it looks to adopt a greener and more environmentally-friendly business model fit for the future.

Kelly Hagger, owner of CK Cars, brought the new Tesla Model 3 to the council offices in Coalville where it was officially licensed by North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC).

Having recently pledged to make its own operations carbon neutral by 2030 and to work with businesses and communities on the green agenda, the district council is delighted to have issued a licence for the vehicle.

CK Cars now has three cars in its fleet, employing three drivers. While the new Tesla is their first electric car, the company hopes to expand on this in the future.

Kelly Hagger said: “Times are changing, going green is the way forward and we are ready to embrace that.

“We’re really proud to have the first licensed electric private hire car in the district and we hope it sets an example that others follow.  North West Leicestershire is a lovely, green district in the heart of the National Forest and we want to do our bit to preserve that.

“The benefits for the environment are huge but we also feel that over the long-term this will benefit our business. We’ll make huge savings on fuel and we believe having a green, environmentally-friendly car will be a huge pull for our customers.”

Councillor Andrew Woodman, Portfolio Holder of Community Services at NWLDC, said: “Earlier this year NWLDC declared a climate emergency and pledged to make its operations carbon neutral by 2030, but there is lots that can happen outside of the council to make the whole district a cleaner and greener place.

“CK Cars are setting a shining example of how a business can adjust to be greener and more environmentally-friendly. We are delighted to have licensed their electric private hire car and we hope it’s the first of many in the district.”
